Boost your Instagram engagement with 5 simple tips

October 16, 2020

Instagram has indeed become a huge part of today’s world and it’s here to stay! This platform provides a huge opportunity to grow your brand. So you would be wasting an opportunity if you don’t make the most of it.

Let’s dive into some tips to take your Instagram engagement to the next level.

1. Post regularly

Instagram’s algorithm rewards regular posting (who would have guessed?) According to a 2017 Tailwind summary, “Profiles that posted seven or more times a week (or at least once a day) get more likes and gain more followers faster than those that post less frequently.”

If you’re someone who finds it hard to remember to post on Instagram, I would recommend you use a scheduling platform such as Later or Unum. This way, you can set your posts and forget them. Soon enough, you’ll have more engagement with your post and more followers!

2. Reply to comments/direct messages as soon as possible

Whether you love it or hate it, replying to comments/DM’s is a definite way to get more engagement from your followers. The way it works is that the more people respond to your post, the more value Instagram places on this post. It then bumps this post up on your followers’ feed.

Replying to comments and direct messages also makes your account seem more human and approachable.

So remember to write-back and tag the people you comment, then they’ll be more likely to comment next time you post.

3. Utilise hashtags

#hashtagsareimportant. According to Later, “A post with at least one Instagram hashtag averages 12.6% more engagement than posts without a hashtag.” But there are also ways to get more from your hashtags. Long-tail hashtags are a good way to build engagement because they focus on more specific keywords that have fewer posts contributing eg. #healthykidfood instead of #kidfood. However, you can always use a mix of more specific hashtags and broader ones. And make sure you mix these hashtags up between pics. You don’t want them to go stale!

4. Write attention-grabbing captions

It goes without saying, but captions do have a huge impact on the engagement for your post. But there’s more to it than that! Try alternating the length of your captions depending on the post. For example, longer story-time comments tend to get great engagement and can be used to communicate more about your brand’s story. Whereas, if you are going to post a quote, then the accompanying caption can be much shorter. At the end of your posts, make sure you have a call to action that invites people to purchase your product or sign up to your waiting list.

5. Instagram stories

Did you know that Instagram stories are used by 500 million users every day (Instagram internal data, January 2019).

Instagram stories allow you to engage with your audience on a deeper level as you can ask questions, create polls, post behind-the-scenes videos, direct people to your posts, and share other people’s posts/stories promoting your product.

You can also use GIFS, emojis, and tags to keep your audience more engaged.

Why wouldn’t you make the most out of this feature?

So now you have some steps to get better engagement on your Instagram, it’s time to implement these ideas. Then sit back with a cup of coffee and watch your Instagram grow!
